Dynamic color holographic display is considered as the ultimate technology for display because it offers the original wavefront of objects in the targets scene. However, current commercial spatial light modulators, as the core devices in holographic display, have several disadvantages that degrade the display performance. A new platform for manipulating wavefront is desired. Inspired by code division multiplexing from wireless and optical fiber communications, research groups of Professor Yongtian Wang and Professor Lingling Huang from Beijing Institute of Technology and Professor Shumin Xiao from Harbin Institute of Technology reported a novel route to achieve dynamic holographic display based on a single metasurface. Benefitting from the redundancy and robustness of a hologram, even non-orthogonal code illuminated patterns are available to be selected as code patterns because of the high information security and flexibility. A series of color images, which consist of 48 independent information channels, are recorded and reconstructed successfully via a DMD in a time division multiplexing color optical system. A short color video is presented based on time-sequential color-coded illumination. This work sheds new light on practical applications of dynamic metasurface holography, optical information processing, compact stimulated emission depletion microscopy and the realization of other complex optical functions.
